Adam's Peak (Sri Pada)

Rising majestically to 2,243 metres above sea level in Sri Lanka's central highlands, Adam's Peak, locally known as Sri Pada, is one of the country's most revered pilgrimage destinations. For centuries, Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims and Christians have climbed this sacred mountain, each faith associating the famous footprint-shaped depression at the summit with its own religious tradition.

For Buddhists, the footprint is believed to be that of Lord Buddha. Hindus regard it as the footprint of Lord Shiva, while Muslims and Christians traditionally associate it with Adam after his descent to Earth. This remarkable shared spiritual heritage has made Sri Pada one of the few pilgrimage sites in the world revered by multiple religions.

The pilgrimage season, typically from December to May, sees thousands of devotees and travellers climbing thousands of illuminated steps during the night to reach the summit before dawn. Watching the sunrise from the peak, accompanied by the mountain's famous triangular shadow stretching across the landscape, is considered one of Sri Lanka's most unforgettable experiences.
