Dambulla Cave Temple

Perched atop a massive granite outcrop overlooking Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle, Dambulla Cave Temple is one of the country's most remarkable religious and archaeological treasures. The origins of Dambulla date back to the 1st century BC when King Valagamba sought refuge in these caves after being driven from his kingdom. Following his return to the throne, he transformed the caves into an extraordinary temple in gratitude for the protection they had provided. Over the centuries, successive monarchs expanded and embellished the complex, making it an enduring symbol of Sri Lanka's Buddhist heritage.
