Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil

Located in the historic city of Jaffna, Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil is one of the most important Hindu temples in Sri Lanka and the spiritual heart of the island's Tamil Hindu community. Dedicated to Lord Murugan, the temple has been a revered place of worship for centuries and remains one of the country's most visited pilgrimage destinations.

Although the original temple dates back to the 10th century, it has been destroyed and rebuilt several times throughout history. The present temple, established in the 18th century, is renowned for its magnificent golden gopuram (entrance tower), intricate Dravidian architecture and beautifully maintained temple grounds that reflect the rich artistic traditions of South India and northern Sri Lanka.

Every year, the famous Nallur Festival transforms the temple into one of Sri Lanka's grandest religious celebrations. Lasting for approximately twenty-five days, the festival attracts hundreds of thousands of devotees who gather to witness colourful processions, traditional music, sacred rituals and the spectacular chariot procession honouring Lord Murugan.
